Unit 01 - Conditions & Connections

Lesson 01: Maslows Hierarchy

The purpose of this lesson is to introduce/revisit Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and the interplay between the various levels. Educators will understand that their ownpurposeful pursuit to nurture and strengthen these needs in their own lives will help them become the best version of themselves.

Lesson 02: Physical & Psychological Safety

Psychological safety starts with having conversations about the feelings of safety and acceptance in our environments. Throughout the activities in this lesson, invite teachers to be proactive and participate in discussions. As educators share their voice and ideas, it should encourage others to speak up and not remain silent. It is important that the norms, or commitments to each other, are in place so that everyone can participate in an atmosphere of respect. Ask teachers to keep a solution-oriented focus and remain forward-thinking.

Lesson 03: Love, Belonging, & Connection

The purpose of this lesson is to explore the real human need for love, belonging, and connection. This lesson walks participants through both the benefits of these conditions as well as the consequences of any deficiencies in these areas. This lesson is a great opportunity to explore any connection issues in the educational environment.

Lesson 04: Self Awareness & Celebrating Strengths

 The purpose of this lesson is for teachers to deepen their understanding of themselves, including how they can use their strengths in life at home, at school, and beyond. Teachers will define self-awareness, discuss strategies for how to improve self-awareness, remind their peers of strengths that they see in them, and complete the Four Corners personality assessment.

Unit 02 - Physical Well-Being

Lesson 05: Managing Stress through Mindfulness

The purpose of this lesson is to help educators draw connections between self-care, stress, and mindfulness. As we increase the awareness of how these three things interfere with and impact our physical well-being, educators will walk away with some different solutions to implement in their own lives, improving their overall wellness.

Lesson 06: Nutrition, Exercise, & Self Care

The purpose of this lesson is for educators to deepen their understanding of meeting their basic nutrition, exercise, and self-care needs. Educators will study the science of nutrition, exercise, and self-care, then explore a mindful eating strategy, brainstorm ways to overcome exercise barriers, and create a self-care action plan.

Lesson 07: Respecting Personal Space

The purpose of this lesson is for teachers to discuss how establishing proper boundaries can keep them safe and well. Teachers will assess personal space concerns, draw connections between boundaries and health, practice setting boundaries, discuss school safety, problem solve based on various scenarios, and collectively air safety concerns.

Unit 03 - Social Well-Being

Lesson 08: Communication & Active Listening

The purpose of this lesson is for educators to improve their communication skills. Educators will reflect on communication happening at school, apply the E.A.R. strategy (empathy, assertiveness, respect), consider context for communication, practice having good conversations, explore resources to improve communication, and apply what they have learned to offer advice on various communication scenarios.

Lesson 09: Empathy

The purpose of this lesson is to explore the notion of empathy and help educators understand that as we model and teach students about empathy, we are creating a more compassionate and inclusive learning community. The lesson content and activities of this lesson are designed to help educators and students take an empathetic lens with self and others in local and global contexts, including their own school and district environment.

Lesson 10: Respect for Others

The purpose of this lesson is to help teachers explore the complex ideas of identity, respect, and inclusion. Teachers will recognize and celebrate the identities and cultures within themselves and of the peers around them. By challenging their own opinions and world views, teachers will exercise their ability to be open-minded. Teachers will co-construct an ideal work community where respect and compassion abound. Please keep all conversations in this lesson productive and solution-oriented. 

Lesson 11: Perspective Taking

The purpose of this lesson is for educators to discuss the role that perspective taking plays in their social well-being. They will discuss both professional and personal relationships, practice looking through a different lens, apply empathy to student and staff culture, articulate the power of listening, and explain how to make choices, while taking important perspectives into account.

Lesson 12: Addressing Microaggressions

The purpose of this lesson is to reflect on microaggressions and their impact on well-being. Educators will discuss how stereotypes and microaggressions affect individuals, model helpful ways to respond to microaggressions, read about how to reduce personal bias, reflect on how to form deeper connections with individuals, and design posters to share what they learned in this lesson.

Lesson 13: Creative Problem Solving

The purpose of this lesson is to dive into the wellness benefits of exercising our creativity. Teachers will assess their use of creative thinking when faced with challenges. They will explore how using creativity can increase investment and enjoyment in their work, as well as how approaching problems creatively can make the process more positive.

Lesson 14: Collaboration

The purpose of this lesson is to help educators develop a strong collaborative culture. Educators will reflect on their experiences with collaboration, identify a shared goal of all members of the school community, highlight key knowledge, skills, and dispositions within the InTASC standards, celebrate strengths of new and experienced teachers, evaluate examples of collaboration, and spend time improving collaboration within teams.

Lesson 15: Conflict Resolution

The purpose of this lesson is for educators to discuss and strategize for conflict in schools. Teachers will analyze conflict patterns, apply different conflict styles, discuss how to use conflict for good, resolve common workplace conflicts, create a school-wide student conflict resolution plan, and reflect on deep needs exposed during conflict.

Unit 04 - Emotional Well-Being

Lesson 18: Identifying & Regulating Emotions

Teachers will recognize the need to identify and regulate their own emotions. Teachers will also recognize the need to create a series of strategies and responses for difficult situations.

Lesson 19: Habits of Happiness & Gratitude

The purpose of this lesson is to help participants explore habits of happiness and how they can deliberately put into practice these habits to establish a lifestyle of happiness, which includes incorporating gratitude into their perspectives.

Lesson 20: Resilience, Perseverance, & Grit

The purpose of this lesson is to help educators analyze their own resilience, perseverance, and grit. They will work to develop beliefs and strategies to use to become more resilient in difficult times.

Lesson 21: Boundaries

The purpose of this lesson is for educators to learn about boundaries. Teachers will define boundaries, recognize the signs of needing a boundary, identify personal values and identify ways to honor them, practice setting boundaries, consider nuances, and accept that saying no is always an option.

Unit 05 - Mental Well-Being

Lesson 22: Critical Thinking

The purpose of this lesson is to explore the role of critical thinking in the work of educators. Teachers will discuss how deep thinking and analysis can impact their work satisfaction, efficiency, and ability to better reach their objectives. Critical thinking involves asking effective questions and using wise strategies to find the answer. Teachers will discuss how to use information to improve their practice and their overall wellness.

Lesson 23: Growth Mindset

The purpose of this lesson is to review what educators already know about a growth mindset. Educators will reflect on their own attitudes and how their own reaction to achievement and failure can impact their work. They will have the opportunity to apply a growth mindset to today’s challenges in order to minimize stress and enjoy the learning process.

Lesson 24: Anxiety & Depression

The purpose of this lesson is for teachers to discuss the impact of anxiety and depression on their students, colleagues, communities, and themselves. Teachers will define various emotional conditions, reflect on their own health, discuss mental health trends, research best practices, proactively problem-solve some issues at school, and learn about available resources.

Lesson 25: Dealing with Grief

The purpose of this lesson is for educators to come to understand that grief is a part of life and is an individual process. Educators will review information about grief and the grieving process, reflect on professional grief, compile a list of helpful strategies, honor a loved one that they have lost, discuss top tips for helping others through grief, and design a customized school support plan for those coping with loss.

Lesson 26: Forgiveness

The purpose of this lesson is to help educators understand the importance of forgiving others and themselves. Educators will write about the benefits of forgiveness, define what truly constitutes forgiveness, consider the role of forgiveness in the workplace, explain the impact of a good apology, and reflect on how forgiveness influences their own well-being.

Lesson 27: Self Compassion

The purpose of this lesson is for educators to consider the impacts of shame both professionally and personally. Teachers will identify areas of concern in schools, practice combating shame with strategies, discuss the power of vulnerability, debate about student discipline, ask for support to prevent burnout, and work with administrators to creatively problem solve.

Lesson 28: Perfectionism vs. Excellence

The purpose of this lesson is for educators to assess their own expectations, professionally and personally. Ultimately, they will consider how to strive for excellence rather than perfection. Teachers will self-assess their thinking, explore research about educators, analyze 10 traits of perfectionism, discuss student challenges, reflect on grading practices, and practice self-compassion with practical simplifying solutions.

Unit 06 - Professional Well-Being

Lesson 29: Professionalism

The purpose of this lesson is to review and reflect on professional standards for professionalism. Primarily, this lesson focuses on the InTASC standards 9 and 10. Some professionalism subtopics addressed in this lesson include wellness, professional learning, performance evaluation, professional choices, improving student learning, and leadership. This lesson is meant to be more of a discussion with staff (lots of listening) rather than a lecture on expectations.

Lesson 30: Goal Setting

The purpose of this lesson is to discuss the power of goals and habits. Educators will assess different influences that can distract or deter them from becoming their best selves. They will also set realistic goals and determine what habits would best support their goals.

Lesson 31: Giving & Receiving Feedback

The purpose of this lesson is for educators to reflect on the role of feedback in their professional and personal lives. Educators will separate their personal identity from their job, practice giving and receiving feedback, and consider their personal relationship with feedback. They will also discuss the culture surrounding feedback at the school and collaborative team levels.

Lesson 33: Deep Learning

The purpose of this lesson is for educators to reflect on and seek out deep learning opportunities. Educators will define deep learning, identify past deep learning experiences, develop a deep learning rubric, rate learning activities using their rubrics, and consider deep learning opportunities in their personal and professional lives.

Lesson 34: Time Management

The purpose of this lesson is for teachers to consider how their use of time affects their success and well-being. Teachers will connect time management with their well-being, sort priorities using different criteria, discuss efficiency, reflect on their weekly schedule, collaborate about school culture, and explore the pros and cons of time management strategies.

Unit 07 - Character & Citizenship

Lesson 37: Agency, Voice, & Choice

The purpose of this lesson is to explore how agency, voice, and choice affects teacher well-being. People thrive at work when they are trusted, heard, and allowed to make choices that have an impact. This lesson will involve teachers in reflecting on their levels of agency, voice, and choice at work, including how their own leadership impacts other people.
