Lesson 36: Culminating Wrap Up

Lesson 36: Culminating Wrap Up

Lesson Resources

Learning Objectives

The purpose of this lesson is to help students recall all the things they have learned about well-being.

Lesson Content

The pyramid of happiness reminds us of all the ways we are growing. When our basic needs are met, it helps us to focus on our social, emotional, mental, physical, and academic well-being, and to develop skills that help us to be good citizens and help others. When we can just be ourselves, we are being our superstar selves.

Essential Terms

social, emotional, mental, physical, academic, well-being

Lesson Plan

Activity 1: (10 minutes) PYRAMID OF HAPPINESS

Review the Pyramid of Happiness poster. Review each level of the pyramid and perform the action that goes with each level.

  • Basic Needs: Rub tummy and pretend to drink (food and water)
  • Safety: Put arms up above head with fingers touching to make a roof shape (shelter)
  • Love: Wrap arms around oneself in a hug (connection)
  • Esteem: Strike a superhero pose (believing in one’s self)
  • Self-Actualization: Star jump with arms and legs spread out (being one’s best, superstar self)

Practice matching the movement to each level by calling out the names of the levels and allowing students to make the movement.

Make the connection of how taking care of our needs, staying safe, loving others, and being proud and content with what we know and can do leads to a happier and healthier life. This makes us the best version of ourselves!

Make a copy of the pyramid of happiness for each child and have them color or decorate their pyramid.

Activity 2: (15 minutes) REMEMBER JAR

Make a copy of the Culminating Wrap-Up Cards. Separate the cards and place them in a large jar. Select one child to come and choose a card from the jar. Review important words on the card. Have a discussion:

  • What is happening in the picture?
  • What did we learn about this subject?
  • How can this lead to us being our superstar selves?

Activity 3: (10 minutes) REMEMBER MATCHING

Make 2 copies of the Culminating Wrap Up Cards. Use them to play a matching game. Encourage the children to talk about what they see in the picture, and what they have learned when they match a picture.

Activity 4: (20 minutes) BE YOU

One thing that we have learned is that we are amazing because we are unique. When we can just be ourselves, we are being our superstar selves. Read Be You, by Peter H. Reynolds, or watch the read-aloud video by KT Tales. Have a discussion:

  • What advice did the book give about each of the following topics?
  • How will “being” each of the things suggested in the book help us to be our superstar selves?
    • Be ready.
    • Be curious.
    • Be adventurous.
    • Be connected.
    • Be persistent.
    • Be different.
    • Be brave.
    • Be your own thinker.
    • Be okay being alone.
    • Be patient.
    • Be okay asking for help.
    • Be loved.
    • Be you.

Trace each child on a sheet of butcher or craft paper. Have each child color themselves and write their name on the poster. Ask the child to recall:

  • Something they have learned this year
  • Something they have done to help others
  • Something they are proud of
  • Something they are trying, but can’t do yet
  • Something they do to take care of their body

Write these items on the poster and hang them in the classroom or hallway.

Discussion/Journal Prompts

  • What is something I have learned?
  • What is something I am still learning?
  • What is one thing I can do to help someone else?

Strategies

  • Remember all the things you have learned
  • Keep learning and trying
  • Always be you!
